Youth Mental Health First Aid Training


Location: Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, UW-Milwaukee 1240 N 10th St, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53205

This FREE training offers adults the skills they need to support youth ages 12-18 developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. 

This training is free and open to the public (with RSVP) and is targeted to those who are: school staff, law enforcement, faith-based communities, hospital staff, parents and guardians, after-school program staff and mentors. 

This training is sponsored by ReCast MKE through the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention in partnership with Community Advocates Public Policy Institute.

Empowerment Coalition of Milwaukee Workshop


Location: United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, 225 W. Vine St., Milwaukee

Calling all social service providers, advocates, and consumers! The Empowerment Coalition of Milwaukee, sponsored by Community Advocates, will hold this discussion of entitlement updates and W-2/Milwaukee County at the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, 225 W. Vine St., Milwaukee, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Advance registration is required. Workshops are $5 per session; please pay in advance or on the day of the workshop.

Milwaukee Record Presents Local Coverage, a Benefit for Milwaukee Women's Center


Location: Turner Hall Ballroom, 1040 Vel R. Phillips Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203

Following four years of fun philanthropy, Milwaukee Record’s Local Coverage benefit will return to Turner Hall Ballroom in early 2019. On Friday, January 18, an eclectic cast of seven local acts from all corners of the stylistic spectrum will each play 15-minute sets, covering material of artists they personally selected from the pool of participating projects. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see your favorite Milwaukee outfits as you’ve never seen them before.

From Direct Hit! adapting the music of Nickel&Rose, Paper Holland re-imagining Immortal Girlfriend, and Amanda Huff covering LUXI shortly after LUXI gives an electronic re-dressing to the ska stylings of Something To Do, Local Coverage is an incomparable event for a great cause. All proceeds will be donated to Milwaukee Women’s Center, a division of Community Advocates.

Doors open at 6:30, show begins at 7:30 p.m.

AWY: Tell Your Story: Understanding the Importance of Evaluation for Coalitions


Location: PPI Training Center, 6900 W. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee

The Southeast Region of the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth is sponsoring this presentation by Stephanie Strutner, MPH, CPSII, Executive Director of ASAP of Anderson, on the importance of evaluation for coalitions. Participants take a deep dive into effective evaluation, tools, and storytelling. While this presentation is primarily targeted toward AWY members, anyone working within a coalition can attend.

Light & Unite Red Community Family Fun Night


Location: COA Youth & Family Center, 2320 W. Burleigh St., Milwaukee

One of the highlights of Light & Unite Red Week 2019 is COA Youth & Family Center’s Light & Unite Red Family Fun Night from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on January 24 at 2320 W. Burleigh St., Milwaukee. This Family Fun Night will offer a community resource fair, five interactive substance use prevention breakout sessions, Milwaukee’s largest family line dance-a-thon complete with a DJ from v100, food for the first 250 participants, and more. The 53206 Drug-Free Communities Project is a sponsor.


Empower MKE Housing and Tenants 101


Location: Washington Park Senior Center, 4420 W Vliet St, Milwaukee, WI 53208

EMPOWER-MKE is a bi-annual citizen advocacy, resource, and informational summit launched by Senator LaTonya Johnson and the 6th Senate District in January 2018, in order to bring all stakeholders together for thoughtful discussions about important and relevant topics. EMPOWER-MKE is a platform for our neighbors to engage in a meaningful dialogue about how we can make our community a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

The January 26 summit will cover Housing and Tenant 101.

Community Advocates Housing Department Manager Shawanna Lindenberg will be on hand to answer questions about housing and tenants rights.
